README

diceware

diceware creates passphrases along the guidelines posted on the diceware page and xkcd. In short, diceware makes use of a physical dice to select words out of word lists. a word list consists of 7776 words, each word yields ~12.9 bits of entropy. Thus, a passphrase made out of 8 words gives a whopping 103.2 bits of entropy + the advantage of having something easy to remember.

diceware can be used to lookup words on different precompiled word lists. This is the recommended mode of operation by the inventor of diceware himself. An example use of diceware looks like this:

  1. The user rolls a physcal dice in groups of 5

    ⚀ ⚁ ⚂ ⚃ ⚄

    ⚁ ⚁ ⚂ ⚂ ⚃

    ⚃ ⚃ ⚄ ⚄ ⚅

    ⚄ ⚃ ⚂ ⚁ ⚀

    ⚂ ⚃ ⚁ ⚄ ⚀

  2. The user looks up the words which map to the dice rolled:

    $> diceware 12345 22334 44556 54321 34251 apathy dang oxeye slain issue

  3. The users passphrase is "apathy dang oxeye slain issue".

In the absence of physical dice, one can also use diceware to generate a passphrase by rolling electronic dice. An example word list made by the -electronic flag would look like this:

$> diceware -electronic
hondo groton tabula pete 2001 cock

Usage:

Usage:
diceware [opts] [roll1] [roll2] [roll3] [...]

        read word list from file
