Wiki Searcher

Overview

Wiki searcher is a sample full text search engine (reverse indexed) project written in Go which consist of the following packages.

  • engine package has a (reversed indexed) indexer which is responsible to index Wiki XML documents by tokenizing the abstract and title of the Wiki document by performing filtering (lower-casing and removing stop words) and stemming phase into the tokens.
  • tcpserver package has a basic tcp server that is responsible to download and decompress the Wiki XML dumps and initialize the indexer with provided document for indexing phase. After these steps tcp server accepts tcp connections and returns the query results.
  • tcpclient package has a basic tcp client which makes tcp connections to the tcp server for the queries.
  • apiserver package has a basic REST api server to perform queries over the engine.
Wiki XML dumps and data folder

For the project, english wikimedia dumps are used as it is described here (Section: Where do I get it?) Index of /enwiki/ consist of date labeled folders and the latest folder. In this project the latest folder and abstract files are used which is probably updated weekly or daily. The abstract file has the following XML document format.

<doc>
    <title>Wikipedia: Anarchism</title>
    <url>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism</url>
Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that is sceptical of authority and rejects all
        involuntary, coercive forms of hierarchy. Anarchism calls for the abolition of the state, which it holds to be
        undesirable, unnecessary, and harmful.
    </abstract>
    <links>
        <sublink linktype="nav">
            <anchor>Etymology, terminology, and definition</anchor>
            <link>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism#Etymology,_terminology,_and_definition</link>
        </sublink>
    </links>
</doc>

Currently, there are 28 different abstract files (including the non indexed one) in the latest folder I did not analyze these files deeply but the non-indexed file (which has over 6 millions document) seems to be containing the whole dump while the others might be parts of it.

The main function which initializes the tcp server and the indexer takes some parameters.

  • host: Hostname of the tcp server
  • port Port of the tcp server
  • network Network of the tcp server [tcp, tcp4, tcp6]
  • index Wiki xml dump index [0, 27] to use with the indexer (0th index uses the largest file, which might take a lot of time to download, uncompress and index)
  • clean If set it removes all the files index, data, downloaded, uncompressed files in the data folder which designed to dump all necessary data for the next usage. This flag can be used to fetch an updated version of xml dump.

	nets := make([]string, 0, 3)
	for n, _ := range networks {
		nets = append(nets, n)
	}
	return strings.Join(nets, ", ")
}

func main() {
	host := flag.String("host", "localhost", "hostname")
	port := flag.String("port", "3333", "port")
	network := flag.String("network", "tcp", "Network should be [tcp, tcp4, tcp6]")
	index := flag.Int("index", 1, "Abstract index [0, 27]")
	clean := flag.Bool("clean", false, "Cleans all files within the data directory if set")
	flag.Parse()

	allowedNetworks := map[string]string{"tcp": "", "tcp4": "", "tcp6": ""}
	if _, ok := allowedNetworks[strings.ToLower(*network)]; !ok {
		log.Fatalf("Not allowed network %s. Network should be: %s\n", strings.ToLower(*network), GetAllowedNetworks(allowedNetworks))
	}

	if *index < 0 || *index > 27 {
		log.Fatalf("Wrong index: %d Index should be [0, 27]", *index)
	}

	tcpServer := tcpserver.NewServer(*host, *port, *network, *index, *clean)

	if err := tcpServer.InitializeServer(); err != nil {
		log.Fatal(err)
	}

	if err := tcpServer.AcceptConnections(); err != nil {
		log.Fatal(err)
	}
}

  App running at:
  - Local:   http://localhost:8080/
  - Network: http://192.168.1.148:8080/

  Note that the development build is not optimized.
  To create a production build, run npm run build.

No issues found.

  • And finally we can open our favourite browser and paste the local network http://localhost:8080/ and we can perform full text search over the engine easily.
